- Abstract
- The origins of this report can be traced to the "Healthy Buildings", the international congress held in Stockholm, in 1988, and a discussion between Erhard Mayer, Liesbeth Preller, Gary Raw, Peder Skov and Ole Valbjorn. These five formed an ad hoc group with Kjell Andersson and Birgitta Berglund, with Gary Raw as coordinator. Lena Lundin also took part in some of the discussions. The group quickly benefited from recognition by CIB (Conseil International du Batiment) as a CIB Task Group within Working Commission W77 (Indoor Climate). The objective of the working group, and of this report, is to discuss principles and approaches to study design. The report does not seek to demonstrate what causal factors are responsible for SBS across the whole range of buildings. Neither does it seek to suggest "cures" and how they can be brought about. Rathre, it discusses the way in which studies should be conducted in order to provide strong scientific evidence on causes. It concentrates on longitudinal intervention studies. The purpose is to work towards a common approach to the main design features of all such studies. This in turn should bring about more effective research with the possibility of comparing and combining results from different studies (ideally by formal meta-analysis).
