- Considerable confusion currently exists regarding flammability tests for synthetic and natural polymers. Many tests have been recommended and are presently in use by several agencies and most likely many others are going to be proposed in the future. It is extremely difficult and almost pointless to talk about flammability behavior of materials unless well defined tests can be used as reference and standard parameters of comparison. There are people who insist on using the match test approach and deliberately attempt to undermine practices and efforts of those who are trying to bring rationality and objectivity into the testing of flammability ratings.
