- Abstract
- In a compartment fire, a layer of hot gases is gradually built up near the ceiling, increasing thermal radiation to combustibles below. The compartment will eventualy be filled with smoke and hot gases, endangering persons traped inside and complicating the work of firefighters. Venting to assist firefighting is the planned removal of fire gases from a fire-involved structure and the replacement of these gases by cool air. This report describes the venting process, types of venting and the advantages and disadvantages of venting. It looks at current practices of venting by firefighters, as well as the research available on venting. It also recommends topics for future research.
