Abstract
In Australia the number of deaths caused by fires in buildings averages about 4 per million population per year. This represents approximately one half of the total number of deaths from fires of all types and about 1 1/2% of all recorded accidental deaths. This Australian experience compares extremely favourably with fatality numbers calculated from overseas data indicating levels of about 22 for USA and around 15 for UK per million population per annum.
