- Abstract
- For most of its 100-year history, the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been the premier source of information on fire experienece and fire safety. From statistics, codes, and standards to fire safety curricula and other educational materials, NFPA provides guidance on how to be safe from fire as well as status reports on how safe Americans actually are. What's been missing is information on Americans' beliefs about fire dangers, their knowledge of the safest behaviors to protect themselves from fire, and their fire safety practices. To address these issues, the NFPA commissioned a telephone survey of 800 households in celebration of its centennial in 1996.
