Abstract
You have expressed an interest in receiving reports generated under the National Smoke Detector Project, a cooperative project sponsored by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Fire Protection Association, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the Congressional Fire Services Institute. As you may know, one of the goals of the Investigations Committee of the National Smoke Detector Project is to determine the extent and reasons for smoke detector inoperability in U.S. residences. With valuable assistance and contributions, CPSC conducted two major studies of smoke detector operability in support of the Investigations Committee. Enclosed is the final report on the first study, "Smoke Detector Operability Survey: Report of Findings", October 1994, for your information. This supersedes the earlier November 1993 version which should be discarded. A report on the Fire Incident Study, the investigation of smoke detector operbility in homes experiencing fires, should be available shortly.
