Abstract
A seires of small scale fire tests were undertaken at the U.S. Coast Guard sponsored shipboard fire and safety testing facility, Mobile, Alabama. These tests were intended to measure the response time of various types of fire detecting systems and determine the proper location of individual detectors under various environmental conditions. Additionally, Phase 2 is intended to give some indication of the feasibility of total machinery space protection by fire detectors. One hundred and five devices of six differenty types were installed. The fire locations and ventilation conditions were varied to indicate differences in response time due to these factors. Unlike Phase 1, It was not necessary to define the general area in which the fire would originate. The tests again demonstrate the importance of environmental conditions on placement of various types of detection devices and indicate, from a detection capability standpoint only, that most devices gave a satisfactory indication of a small machinery space fire. It appears from these tests that total monitoring of machinery space by fire detectors is feasible.
