Abstract
Petroleum tank farms and refineries process and store large inventories of flammable gases and liquids. The presence of such high concentrations of flammable materials makes it inevitable that when a product is accidentally released and ignited, the resulting fire may spread and jeopardize the whole facility, its employees and neighbors. For the optimum design of product release and fire prevention and response systems, it is important to know the most likely sequence of events that could lead to a major fire and to be able to predict its consequences so that its risk may be reduced. The purpose of this paper is to provide historical data and information that would allow the risks at petroleum tank farms and refineries to be identified and quantified.
