Abstract
This study represents an attempt to achieve a better understanding of the phenomena involved in the extinguishment of wood fires through water application. A preliminary phase of the investigation deals with the dependence of the burning rate of a densely packed crib on the cooling of the gases inside the shafts. The experimental part involvesthe use of a set of cooling tubes positioned in the center of the shafts. Water is made to fall along the sides of the tubes and the amount of water vaporized is measured by a system of collecting devices and a balance. The interpretation of the changes in crib burning rate obtained with this particular cooling mode requires the capability to separate the contribution ofthe shafts from that of the outside surfaces to the total burning rate.
