Abstract
There are many kinds of classifications athat can be used when discussing smoke control systems. Systems have been built that employ the physical principles of pressurisation, velocity, buoyancy, compartmentation and dilution. These systems have been used in an effort to provide protection for stairwells, elevators, corridors, large areas of buildings and atriums. Probably the most common types of smoke control systems are pressurized stairwells, zoned smoke control and atrium smoke control. The capabilities of these systems will be discussed with emphasis on interaction of smoke control and sprinklers. Concerns of testing and reliability will be addressed.
