Abstract
A principal purpose of NBS/CFR is: "To provide national leadership in development of fire sciences and technology for use in standards valuations and performace testing of materials to reduce fire hazard and loss." This role is met through a balanced program of intramural, interagency and extramural projects which are compatible with identified objectives or thrusts. The desired consequence of these programs and the ultimate benefit of contributions from the NBS/CFR and the national fire research community, whether involved in the study of molecular mechanisms of thermal degradation or the assessment of human behavior, is the prevention and mitigation of fire and its costly drain on society through loss of property and individual suffering.
