Abstract
In fiscal 1969-1970, $1.76 billion was spent by local governments on direct fire protection services, compared to $2.99 billion on police and $2.10 billion on sanitation. Fire-related expenditures by water supply, police, and other government services were not included in the $1.76 billion. Estimated losses from fires in 1971 were $2.27 billion, 11,850 lives, and 107,000 injuries requiring medical attention. Losses in business revenues, people displaced, jobs lost, and other economic and social costs are not relrected in these statistics.
