Abstract
The lack of both validated and convenient methods to evaluate the fire resistance of organic polymers and fiber-reinforced composites continues to be a major impendiment to their widespread application in military systems. The oxygen index (OI) test is the predominant method used to determine fire resistance in terms of ease of ignition. Current state-of-the-art apparatus has an upper test temperature limit of 400 deg C. This report describes research accomplished under a Phase 1 SBIR project aimed at designing an OI apparatus capable of making measurements up to 800 dec C.
