Abstract
The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) hosted the National Firefighter Health and Safety Forum on October 14 and 15 at Georgetown University Conference Center in Washington, D. C. The forum was made possible by a grant from The Foundation for the Health and Safety of American Firefighters. The forum was designed to bring the current issues in firefighter health and safety to the attention of the United States Congress. The information contained in this document therefore, is meant to inform and educate Congress. The enclosed forum proceedings include suggestions made by attendees in each of seven workshops. These workshops addressed Emergency Medical Services; Fire Apparatus; Fire Suppression Operations; Hazardous Materials; Laws, Regulations and Standards; and Physical and Psychological Health. Each workshop was moderated by a chairperson, included national experts in the seven subject areas and solicited the suggestions and input from all attendees. The first section of this document contains several summary recommendations, one or two for each of the seven subject areas covered during the forum. Section two includes additional recommendaitons made by forum attendees, as well as background information concerning the forum faculty and which organization he or she represented. Seciton foru contains the names of the Firefighter Health and Safety Committees who worked with CFSI to plan the forum. The last segment of the document, the appendix, is an alphabetical listing fo forum attendees.
