Abstract
This report documents the work performed by the Parker Hannifin Corporation for the Flight Dynamics Directorate and the JTCG/AS to optimize and perform proof-of-concept tests of the Parker Reactive Explosion Suppression System (PRESS). This innovative system is designed to be installed in aircraft fuel tanks and react to and suppress fuel tanks and react to and suppress fuel tank explosions. Phase 1 of the effort was reported in Air Force-JTCG/AS report WRDC-TR-90-3064, JTCG/AS-90-T-001. PRESS demonstrates its ability to suppress a simulated 28-mm HEI ignition in Parker Hannifin's 12-gallon test tank. The nozzles used in Phase 1 reacted too quickly to maintain suppression. New nozzles were needed to quickly knock down an explosion and sustain suppression, while having an acceptable level of manufacturability. The new nozzles were designed, tested and demonstrated initial explosion knock down and sustained suppression. Despite this success, repeat performance could not be demonstrated due to funding limits. Gun fire tests were not performed.
