Abstract
This paper summarises data obtained on the use of the pyrethroid cypermethrin in preventative and remedial wood preservative formulations. The results of laboratory tests using the common furniture beetle, the house longhorn beetle, the Lyctus powder-post beetle and the termite Reticulitermes santonensis suggest that cypermethrin is as toxic, or more toxic than lindane. Concentrations suggested as likely to achieve adequate insecticidal loadings for pretreatment and remedial treatment formulations are 0.05 per cent and 0.l per cent, respectively (for pine sapwood). Results indicate that cypermethrin should be more suitalbe for emulsion-based remedial treatment formulations that the chlorinated hydrocarbons, since they are less vulnerable to volatilisation, although further assessment under practical conditions is necessary.
