Abstract
False alarms and missed detections are common problems to any autonomous surveillance system. The present investigation describes the possible causes for the occurrences of false alarms and missed detection in a demonstration system based on an electro-optical sensor for the autonomous detection of wildfires. After an analysis of the basic physical principles of autonomous wildfire detection, the possible causes for false alarms/missed detections are investigated. Based on the false alarm/missed detection analysis the design of an autonomous wildfire detection sensor is described.
