Abstract
Control of the surface flammability of materials provides one method of limiting the rapid early spread of fire by building components when exposed to an accidental fire. It is unfortunate, however, that the flammable behavior of a material is not uniquely characterized by its chemical properties, but is quite significantly influenced by the specimen dimensions, geometry, moisture content, method of test, etc. Because of this, it has been difficult to justify any on method of flammability measurement as "correct" or "ideal." Much depends on the intended application of the results of the measurement.
