Abstract
ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH This report states the current position of the knowledge about smoke spread through ventilation duct networks and a proposal how further research should be carried on. The fire effect, the outer and inner airtightnesses of the building and the ventilation system determine whether smoke spread will occur or not. Simple models for the fire, the building and the ventilation are given and used to study an exhaust air ventilation system, a closed and an open exhaust and inlet air ventilation system. All ventilation systems served only two rooms. The results showed that smoke spread through ventilation duct networks could hardly occur in exhaust air systems but would be very likely in exhaust and inlet air systems. Further work with more detailed models and simple experiments showed good agreement between both simple and advanced calculations and measurements. Several reports about smoke spread through ventilation duct networks in buildings and used computer programs are commented. A number of interviews with fire fighting personnel have been carried out to find smoke spread cases. Only one vertain case of smoke spread through ventilation duct networks was found.
