Abstract
By 1980, without increased government-industry action, the annual tangible cost of fire in the U.S. is likely to exceed $10,000 million (up from $5300 million) including about $3000 million in direct property losses (up from $1800 million). Contributing to high fire losses will be the concentration of valuable property and the increasing use of high temperatures and pressures and hazardous materials. This report focuses on fires in industrial and commercial properties; residential, transportation, and forest fires are discussed briefly.
