Abstract
This report describes the development of a test method for the assessment of acute inhalation toxicity of combustion products of materials. The procedure is primarily intended for research and screening purposes. It provides: 1) a method for determining, under flaming and non-flaming conditions, the LC50 (the concentration of combustion products which causes 50% lethality in the test animals (rats) exposed for 30 minutes and observed for 14 days following exposure); 2) an optional procedure to examine materials which rapidly produce combustion products which cause death of test animals within a 10 minute exposure and a 14 day post-exposure observation period; and 3) a description of analytical and physiological measurements which can provide more detailed information on the nature of the toxic effects of combustion products. Limitations of the test method are identified and future work to address them is proposed. The participation through the direct exchange of technical information of organizations representing academic, industry, and other agencies of the United States Government is acknowledged.
