Abstract
A simplified model is developed for the radiative, turbulent, upward spread of flames over the surface of a char-forming material under the influence of an external radiant source. Turbulent, radiation and charring effects are incorporated in the analysis in the form of modifications of the nondimensional parameters controlling the spread process. The objective of the study is to provide a simple analytical formula for the upward fire spread rate to which data from a stationary test method apparatus can be inputed to predict and quantify the hazard of upward spread for a material.
