- Abstract
- As long as man has known fire, he has known that fires would extinguish naturally when the fuel was consumed. By experience, early man also learned that fires could be extinguished before the fuel was consumed, if sufficient quantities of water were applied over the burning fuel. Fire suppression technology was born. Today, qualitative physical explanations for fire extinguishment using many different agents and application techniques are available. All of these depend on one or more of four basic principles to extinguish fires. There are: Cooling, Oxygen dilution, Fuel isolation and Chemical reaction inhibition.
