- The purpose of this publication is to provide a better understanding of the problems and hazards which may be encountered and to describe the steps which are necessary to ensure safe practices in the cleaning of petroleum storage tanks. A thorough knowledge of the chemical and physical characteristics of the product which has been stored in a tank, as well as the potential physical and mechanical hazards involved, is required in order to clean a petroleum storage tank safly.
