Abstract
The prevention of deaths, injuries and property loss from fire is the highest priority of the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM), a non-profit organization whose members include the most senior fire official of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Association of Home Appliance Manufactures (AHAM), the international nonprofit organization of the major and portable home appliance industry, has a long history of consumer safety innovation and an interest in the safe design, manufacture and use of appliances produced by its member companies. Both organizations recognize that fire prevention has two fundamental elements: (1) the first is the design, production and servicing of the safest possible products and materials. AHAM and NASFM members participate actively in the development and enforcement of electrical safety and fire codes affecting industrial, commercial and residential structures and products; (2) the second element of fire prevention is behavioral. Consumers often must be educated, reminded and motivated to use products in a safe manner. Behavioral strategies cannot be generalized. Cultural, gender, age, language, economic and other factors may govern individuals' ability and willingness to heed safety messages.
