- Abstract
- In recent years a variety of studies and figures relating to the costs of illnesses have been generated in the health field. The methods used range from broad statements of costs, with no apparent basis, to detailed, sophisticated economic analyses. In order to justify categorical program expenditures, costs are often estimated in gross terms, with emphasis on the economic impact on society of the disease in question. This study presents a framework for calculating the economic costs of illness, disability and death and performs the calculations.
