Abstract
It is a pleasure to be asked to address this group. You gentlemen are interested in the efficient and imaginative design of buildings. You are here to learn how the potential hazard of fire will effect your plans. If you were not innovators you would have no problem. Our present-day codes and the standard proof tests which they reference have been developed over many years of experience with traditional designs and traditional construction materials and methods. Although they are not perfect, they are good codes and work quite well in the traditional application. But you are innovators. The building which you design are not tradiitonal. You design offices with acres of unsubdivided floor, warehouses for 60-foot-high storage piles, and you employ all the latest technological advances in materials, design and construction to achieve your goal.
