Abstract
The application of wood as building material might be considered equal in age with the human race. For a long time wooden constructions were made without static calculation only based on empirical dimensions. As a result of this, the wooden constructions, practically in most instances, were oversized. The forest stand made for centuries possible this kind of wasting. In line with the reduction of the quantity of wood available, new materials appeared and the wood - as building material - lost its importance.
