Abstract
The Fire Research Station is a research laboratory within the Building Research Establishment of the Department of the Environment. As the national laboratory in the United Kingdom it plays an essential role not only in the conduct of research in support of regulations but also to provide practical solutions to problems for all those involved in fire prevention, fire protection and fire extinction. This paper will discuss the role of the UK Fire Research Station and outline the basis for the current national fire research programme to mitigate the loss of life and property which occurs each year in fires in the UK.
