Abstract
Measures to be taken to ensure passive fire protection in buildings are described. The fire resistance ratings required for the loadbearing components of a building are discussed as well as the methods of achieving them. Fire stopping, where services and openings penetrate walls and floors that separate fire compartments, is dealt with as well as methods of preventing the rapid spread of fire in fire compartments. A table is given listing the fire properties of various building materials. This should be useful to fire prevention officers, architects and other designers.
