Abstract
Man's greatest achievements have not been made without some pain, however. Fires, unexpected and often uncontrolled, break out everywhere. Last year alone, some 12,000 Americans were killed by fire, and property worth $2,000,000,000 or more was destroyed. And these statistics are only a part of the story; the total loss to our society in terms of creative talent, tax revenues, investment potential, business interruption, and destruction of the hearts and minds of people cannot be measured. When one adds the cost of providing protection (which often does not do the job), the total commitment of national resources to the fire problem is staggering.
