Abstract
Synthetic polymers are being used increasingly as building construction and furnishing materials, primarily replacing metals and wood. As recent building fires have demonstrted, these plastics are much more flammable than the materials that they are replacing. In order to prevent fires of this nature, it is of interest to develop and use plastics that do not ignite easily. Unfortunately, few fundamental experimental investigations of polymer ignition have been conducted.
