- Abstract
- Wood is probably the oldest building material used by man; the Romans recognized the need for some form of fire retardant treatment and soaked wood in brine. In the UK wood was used uncontrolled until after the Great Fire of London, when the first form of regulations were introduced. In the mid 1880's, vacuum pressure impregnation of salt based chemicals was invented and this remains the basis of existing treatments today.
