Abstract
The synthesis and thermal properties of several condensed phase flame retardants will be discussed in this seminar. The materials to be discussed are separated into three different categories. The first category of materials is alkyne-containing polymers, oligomers, carbonates, and diphenylether materials. The second category of materials is the phosphorus-containing materials: phosphine oxides, phosphates, and oligophosphates. The third and final category discussed in this seminar is a new class of condensed phase flame retardants, aromatic boronic acids. All of the materials synthesized were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The materials which showed desired thermal properties by TGA and DSC were then blended into polycarbonate (PC) or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins and tested for ignition resistance using the UL-94 flame test.
