- Abstract
- A statistical survey of 133 fire and explosion accidents on fixed platforms in the Norwegian North Sea has been performed. Most of the accidents caused little or no property damage. The most important ignition sources were welding and cutting. To prevent future accidents the following recommendations are made: 1) Better checking and freeing for hydrocarbons before welding and cutting; 2) Better housekeeping and storing of rubbish, tarpaulins, ropes, etc; and 3) Better shielding of exhaust pipes and other hot surfaces.
