- Abstract
- Completion, modification, and break-in of the experimental apparatus are described. Major progress is reported in the first experimental phase of the two-phase program to study the ease of ignition of fabrics. The first phase is concerned with effects of the exposure mode on the ignition times of fabrics. For methane diffusion flames, it appears that the minimum ignition time occurs for fabric locations near the level of the luminous flame tip. This minimum ignition time is quite insensitive to the burner tube diameter, fabric orientation, and flame heights in the range 0.5 in to 1.0 in. Further experiments are needed to firm up these conclusions, investigate their generality with respect to fabric identity, study the effects of premixed flames, and explore the effects of skin (simulant) proximity. For future tie-in with theory, porosity measurements on the 20 GIRCFF fabrics are also reported.
