Abstract
A literature review of the effects of moisture on built-up roofing was made. Quantitative data were summarized for some properties of membrane roofing including: permeability, absorption, thermal expansion, thermal resistance, tensile strength, modulus, and fungus attack resistance. Example calculations of possible temperature and moisture gradients for two typical roof sections were presented. Nondestructive evaluative methods to locate moisture in roofing systems were summarized and include gravimetric, nuclear, capacitance, infrared imagery, electrical resistance, and microwave methods. A review of techniques to dissipate moisture in roofing is presented.
