Abstract
This is the fourth in a series of long-range plans for the Center for Fire Research of the National Bureau of Standards. It is an updated version of the third plan which outlined the current specific thrusts of the Center. The goal of the Center remains essentially unchanged since its creation in 1974 following passage of the Fire Prevention and Control Act. It is to provide the scientific and technical basis for reducing fire losses and the costs of fire protection. Fire losses in the United States are among the very worst in the world. The premise for this program is that fundamental and applied research into all critical aspects of fire phenomena will provide the basis for cost-effective means to cut U.S. fire losses and fire protection costs by more than half. Results to date affirm this premise. This plan chart the critical path for the Center in meeting this objective and identifies the principal issues that must be addressed in keeping it on the path.
