Abstract
Space heaters are number six in the ranking of most frequently involved direct fabric ignition source in the Flammable Fabrics Accident Case and Testing System (FFACTS). Eighty-two of the 1573 direct fabric ignition incidents in FFACTS were caused by space heaters. Gas heaters were responsible for 83 percent of all direct garment ignitions where heater type was known. Nightgowns, dresses and robes account for 82 percent of all the garment items directly ignited. Forty-seven percent of the direct garment ignition incidents would probably not have occurred if the presently existing fabric flammability standards had been in effect at the time.
