Abstract
Fire is a destructive force whose tragic consequences are always measured in human and economic costs. Whenever fire occurs that results in serious injury, death, or destruction of a structure or its contents, it has an impact on the community. Fire losses coupled with the cost of delivering manual fire protection services is a major economic and social cost for cities. Through use of modern fire protection methods that incorporates a balance between passive and pro-active methods, fire losses can be managed and even controlled. The purpose of this paper is to provide the participants in this symposium with a perspective on how the installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems can be the cornerstone of a modern fire protection delivery system.
