Abstract
Detonations can be started in various ways: by explosive charges, by shock waves, by wire explosions, by flames, by hot wire a.o. Usually the detonation starts between a few centimeters and a few meters away from the place of ignition. The time intervall between ignition and the onset of a detonation is in the order of milliseconds or less. After that time intervall the detonation velocity (about 1000 to 4000 meters/sec) of the stable detonation is reached. the corresponding Mach numbers are between 3 and 12.
