Abstract
The Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention Program, as part of its effort to develop forest fire prevention campaigns of maximum effectiveness, has undertaken this study to measure the public's knowledge of Smoky the Bear and the Smoky campaign as well as attitudes toward forest fires and fire prevention programs. The information required covered three broad areas of investigation: 1. The extent to which the Smoky the Bear campaign has registered among the public. 2. Reactions to Smoky the Bear and the campaign. 3. Knowledge of attitudes toward forest fires. Since it was believed that attitudes and knowledge in these areas may vary considerably among adults, teenagers and younger children, the study design included these three groups. Further, since it is suspected that the incidence of deliberate setting of forest fires varies by geographic area, it was considered important to develop information by regions. For reasons of economy and other practical considerations, the study was limited to three important forest areas: the East, the South, and California.
