Abstract
A number of government regulatory agencies are increasing their use of standards developed by the private sector. Federal Regulators are, however, being required to provide increasing justification for their regulations, especially information on their economic desirability. If regulators are to effectively use voluntary standards in their regulations rather than develop standards in-house, they will need the same types of economic information on the voluntary standards as they would have on their in-house standards.
