Abstract
This report presents the relative flammability characteristics of conventional and advanced organic matrix based thermoset and thermoplastic composite materials suitable for surface ship and submarine applications. The thermoset materials evaluated included vinyl ester, epoxies, bismaleimides, modified bismaleimides, phenolics, and polyimides. Thermoplastic materials evaluated included polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyester ether ketone (PEEK), and polyaryl sulfone (PAS). The flammability characteristics evaluated in this study included flame spread index (ASTM E-162), smoke density and combustion gas generation (ASTM E-662), residual flexural strength (ASTM D790), heat release as measured by cone calorimeter (ASTM P-190), limiting oxygen index (ASTM D2863), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
