Abstract
A variety of physical and chemical procedures have been employed for drying organic compounds. The former include oven drying, volatilization employing a dry carrier gas, and distillation. Chemical methods usually require hydration of certainanhydrous salts and reaction with metal oxides or strong reducing agents. Among the slts in order of decreasing efficiency are anhydrous Mg(C10₄)₂, CsSO₄, CaCl₂, CuSO₄. Oxides include P₂O₅, BaO,CaO, Al₂O₃, silica gel. Anhydrous or concentrated H₂SO₄ also may be employed in special cases. Sodium metal, hydrides and carbides are used as chemical agents.
