Abstract
This report is intended to give the fire-loss picture and to identify problem areas - not on an individual agency basis, but rather on a Federal Government-wide basis. However, this report is generally restricted to reported losses involving buildings and contents in the Continential United States. Each agency and establishment should review the data contained herein and revise its fire prevention and fire protection program as may be indicated. There are some recommended agency actions at the end of the report which may provide helpful in program improvement. Although fire losses in government property and the number of fatalities declined during fiscal year 1959 compared with 1958, the number of fires and the number of injuries increased. Every fire has a devastating potential. Therefore, fire protection programs should be geared towards the complete elimination of fires.
