- Abstract
- The primary source for collating the information of this glossary was World Surface Coating Abstracts (Review of Current Literature of Paint and Allied Trades) from 1956 to July 1973. The pioneer plan of intumescent paints has been reviewed by Brushwell and a full historical survey is provided by Vandersall in a very detailed and reasoned review to which the present glossary is heavily indebted. Literature references are in alphabetical order; reference 131 onwards refer to patent specifications and may be sought in the patent abstract section of the book. There is no claim that the glossary in the bibliography is exhaustive although the attempt has been to provide as complete a coverage of intumescent coating compositions as possible. A few commercial paints available in the U.K. have been listed under their trade names but the intention in inserting them has been illustratory and the search has not been extended to commercial trade literature. Some of the entries have been concerned with fire-retardent additives to plastics; this is to cover the overlap into this very broad field necessitated by the use of plastics (polyurethanes) as film-formers. A great deal of information on this subject is collected in an important recent book by Lyons, "The Chemistry and Uses of Fire Retardents", which contains about 4000 citations.
