- Abstract
- Navy aircraft accidents are a logical consequence of aviation operations. Only a very small percentage of the $350-400 million annual aircraft accident losses are due to fire. Aircraft fires aboard ships carrying aircraft are particularly hazardous because of the density of aircraft, high fuel load, large amount of ordnance, and potential openings into the ship structure. As with any new emergine technology or material, the fire protection community has some basic questions relative to composite materials: Does it burn? How do I extinguish it? Is it hazardous to fire fighters? What should I worry about after the fire is out? Significant statistics on Navy aircraft and a summary of the primary fire protection concerns pertaining to composite materials were summarized during the presentation.
