Abstract
This paper describes a new algorithm for fast, automatic integration of the chemical kinetics equations describing homogeneous gas phase combustion at constant pressure. Particular attention is paid to the distinguishing physical and computational characteristics of the introduction, heat release and equilibration regimes. The two-part, predictor-corrector algorithm is based on the "exponential-fitted trapezoidal rule" developed by Liniger and Willoughby and by Brandon. The algorithm includes filtering of ill-posed initial conditions, automatic stepsize selection, and automatic selection of functional iteration or Newton iteration for convergence, in order to achieve maximum computational speed while observing a prescribed error tolerance. The new algorithm was found to be five times faster than LSODE on a representative test problem.
