Abstract
Until the year 1966, most of the rapid, uncomplicated, methods of accessing the flammability behavior of polymeric materials employed a burner as the flame source and normal atmosphere as the sample environment. The development of the oxygen index technique and the advent of the temperature index concept added a new dimension to the study of fire resistance. Our investigation of the oxygen-temperature index relationship has shown that the temperature index profile provides a more reliable and complete indication of the flammability behavior of a variety of organic polymers and composites.
